Potter’s Wax Museum in St. Augustine, Florida, holds the distinction of being America’s first wax museum, established in 1948 by George L. Potter. Inspired by a childhood visit to Madame Tussauds in London, Potter aspired to bring the art of wax sculpting to the United States.
He realized this vision by opening the museum, initially named “Potter’s International Hall of Fame,” at the corner of King Street and A1A. The museum featured a collection of over 160 meticulously crafted wax figures, ranging from historical icons to contemporary celebrities.
Following Potter’s death in 1979, the museum faced challenges, leading to its closure in 1986. However, former curator Dottie White acquired a significant portion of the original collection and reopened the museum in 1987 at a new location. Today, Potter’s Wax Museum is located at 31 Orange Street, within the historic Old Drugstore building in downtown St. Augustine.
More Than 160 Wax Figures
The museum’s collection comprises over 160 wax figures, including U.S. presidents such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, cultural icons like Elvis Presley and Michael Jordan, and fictional characters like Harry Potter and Frankenstein’s Monster. Each figure is crafted with real human hair inserted strand by strand, handmade eyes in Germany, and sculpted hands in Belgium.
Themed Galleries
Visitors can explore various themed galleries, including Ancient History, European History, American History, Arts and Culture, Science, Government, and Sports. The museum also offers a glimpse into the wax-making process through its on-site studio, where artists sculpt, paint, dress, and detail the figures in view of guests.
Potter’s Wax Museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $16.18 for adults and $9.09 for children aged 4–12, with free entry for children under 4. Group rates are available for parties of 10 or more. Photography is encouraged, allowing visitors to capture memories alongside their favorite figures.
